Strength of Materials Laboratory

Laboratory Name : Strength of Materials
Area of Laboratory : 160.55 sq.m
Laboratory In charge : Dr. Mohd. Zameeruddin
Laboratory Information :

Strength of materials is one of the important subject in civil engineering. It is the physical science that looks at the reaction of a body to movement and deformation due to mechanical, thermal and other loads.

In Strength of Materials Laboratory, students will have the opportunity to apply loads to various materials under different equilibrium conditions. The student will perform tests on different materials in tension, torsion, bending, and buckling etc. These conditions and/or constraints are designed to reinforce classroom theory. By performing required tests in this lab, students get a near realistic feel of the experiment. Student can analyze subsequent data, and compare the results with theory. Quiz is provided at the end of the each lab to test the understanding of student.

Equipments:-

  1. 180 Bend test attachment with P-5 Bending Pane
  2. Small Big Double shear test Apparatus
  3. Mechanical Extensometer
  4. Universal Testing Machine (UTM)
  5. Impact Testing Machine
  6. Rockwell Cum Brinell Hardness Tester
  7. Torsion Testing Machine

List of Experiments:-

  1. Tension test on mild steel bar to study stress-strain characteristics.
  2. Tension test on tor steel bar.
  3. Flexural test on beam (central point load) (plotting of load – deflection curve and finding value of E)
  4. Flexural test on beam (two point load) (plotting of load – deflection curve and finding value of E)
  5. Impact test on metals. (Charpy and Izod)
  6. Brinell and Rockwell hardness test on metals.
  7. Punching shear test using Hounsfield Tensometer.
  8. Absorption and crushing test on bricks.
  9. Absorption and transverse test on cement / mosaic floor tiles.
  10. Strain measurements in beam using mechanical extensometer.
